One of the last things we did in Iceland was get into a monster truck and drive 1300 meters up onto the Vatnajökull glacier. Walking around on top of more than 100 meters of ice (that’s moving!) is pretty cool. Being inside a cloud is pretty cool too. And looking over a cliff edge down into that cloud. And the glacial lagoon Jökulsárlón.
It was all awesome. The whole trip! Now I just need to go back for the northern coast…
Tiny icebergs stuck at low tide.
You can go out for rides on Zodiacs like this or duck boats.
A lonely boat trailer waiting for another eruption and flood to get its boat back
Up somewhere between 1000 and 2000 meters.
At the top of our drive onto the glacier. This is at 4230ft.
This is now a glacial lagoon but only 130 years ago there was 200 meters of ice right here. This is partially a normal cycle but is likely accellerated by global warming.
The edge of the largest glacier in Europe!
Into the clouds. We could have kept going north for 60km before we hit ground again. There was 100 meters of ice underneath us here.
